From the olive harvest to Olivenleder® – how crop residues become a bio-based tanning agent

Many of you wanted to hear the sobering story behind our ironic LinkedIn post "Leather Hazard Zone." Tanning from olive harvest residues plays a central role. This is how agricultural residues become wet-green® tannin for Olivenleder® – and that’s why it’s relevant.

Harvest residues become raw materials

After each pruning and each olive harvest, mountains of leaves, small twigs, and prunings remain. Instead of burning or dumping this biomass, we collect it near the plantations and grind it into uniform chips for controlled extraction. A constant flow of material keeps energy consumption low and makes subsequent extraction efficient.

Extraction with water and heat – nothing else

The chips from the olive tree pruning are extracted in hot water under vacuum (over 100 °C). Natural polyphenols and the natural crosslinking agent based on oleuropein are converted into a strong, tea-like extract. Filtration removes solids, and gentle thickening concentrates the extract into a syrup-like texture. without Chromium salts or metals, without synthetic chemicals, without strong acids. Because the process is entirely bio-based, no hazardous material labeling is required; helmets and gloves only protect against hot liquid and moving parts.

Why tanneries and end users benefit

The use of wet-green® tanning agent replaces heavy metals and metallic tanning processes, as well as synthetic reactive chemicals (e.g., glutaraldehyde). Handling becomes easier, healthier, and safer for tannery employees. The environment also benefits: agricultural residues are recycled, toxic sludge is eliminated, and the carbon footprint remains low. The resulting leather is soft (ideal for nappa leather), full, and strong.

Circular – from fur back to the field

The cycle does not end at the tanning plant: offcuts and chips from Olivenleder® can be certified organic fertilizer process and return nutrients back to the soil instead of to landfill.

The conclusion?

High-performance leather requires neither chrome nor petrochemicals. A tanning agent derived entirely from olive harvest residues enables smaller environmental footprints, safer workplaces – and Olivenleder®that feels as good as it looks.
